The hospitality industry in Australia has been grappling with an enduring challenge: staff shortages that continue to hinder its growth and potential.

Unfortunately, the current Government is reintroducing working hour caps for student visa holders starting from July 1st. This decision will have a far-reaching implications for both the hospitality industry and the aspiring individuals who come to Australia seeking educational and professional opportunities.

There has been no consultation with Industry, which clearly shows there’s no understanding about the current and enduring hardships experienced by hospitality businesses.

Today, we stand against this Government on this decision for our own business, our members’ businesses, and the wider hospitality industry.

Our shared vision is to ensure that international students can contribute their skills and talents without unnecessary restrictions. An hour caps is impractical and detrimental, creating barriers for both international student visa holders and the industry itself.

How is a student expected to cope with rising costs when they can only work 24 hours? How does an employee find staff to fill the gaps with a skills shortage?

It’s time all hospitality businesses take a stand against this action. How much more do we need to endure as an industry? Have your say!
